English Media Split Over Bowen’s Display vs Uruguay
Jarrod Bowen was introduced in the first half for England on a largely frustrating evening for the West Ham United star against Uruguay.
The West Ham skipper was brought on with 38 minutes played of Friday’s 1-1 friendly draw against Uruguay as Noni Madueke went off injured.
Bowen was given longer than he would have anticipated at Wembley after being named on the substitutes’ bench for the first of this month’s two friendlies.
However, the 29-year-old was not his usual self in what was a low-quality contest – as can often be the case in these spring friendlies.

How did Jarrod Bowen perform in England 1-1 Uruguay?
Bowen is one of multiple West Ham players currently on international duty, with this break coming right in the thick of the Irons’ Premier League relegation scrap.
The former Hull City ace did not really have many opportunities to show his quality, though neither did he take the game by the scruff of the neck.
BBC Sport summed it up well as they wrote: “Replaced Madueke in the first half but it was a quiet performance from the West Ham forward. 5.”
“Quiet” is a word that repeatedly came up, with The Guardian also using it in their player ratings article.
As for Goal, they went for: “Persistent albeit not particularly threatening. 6/10.”
The Mirror and the Daily Star each went with 6/10 ratings also, adding little more on Bowen’s performance out wide.
Finally, Adrian Durham of talkSPORT went for a rather harsh 4/10, with only four players ranking lower for England.
Will Bowen get another chance to impress Thomas Tuchel?
Thomas Tuchel named an expanded 35-man squad for this month’s friendlies with Uruguay and Japan in order to look at as many players as possible.
The big-hitters such as Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice & Co. were given the night off for the first of those fixtures but will return against Japan on Tuesday.
It is not clear which players will remain in the squad for both games, but it is likely Bowen will be retained.
Bowen’s role in the England squad is quite clear, which is that he is an option that can be called upon f rom the substitutes’ bench.
