Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly among seven clubs considering a move for free-agent striker Mauro Icardi, with the experienced Argentine forward attracting interest from two Premier League sides as he searches for his next club.

Spurs have endured a difficult start to the 2026/27 campaign, but their recent 3-1 victory over Coventry City on Monday night offered a much-needed boost. After weeks of frustration and disappointing results, the North London side finally secured their first win of the season, giving Roberto De Zerbi and his players something positive to build on.

However, despite the encouraging result, there are still plenty of concerns surrounding Tottenham’s attacking options, particularly when it comes to finding a reliable goalscorer who can ease the burden on Dominic Solanke.

The English striker led the line against Coventry, but his ability to remain fit and deliver consistently could prove crucial to Tottenham’s hopes of climbing away from the bottom of the Premier League table.

With the season still in its early stages, the club may need to explore the transfer market for additional firepower. Interestingly, a proven goalscorer with an impressive record of 250 senior club goals could be available without Tottenham having to pay a transfer fee.

Tottenham Considering Surprise Move for Mauro Icardi

According to a report from Argentine outlet TyC Sports, Tottenham are among seven clubs monitoring the situation of former Inter Milan and Galatasaray striker Mauro Icardi.

The 33-year-old has been without a club since leaving Galatasaray over the summer, making him an intriguing option for teams looking to strengthen their attacking departments without spending money on a transfer fee.

Icardi was previously linked with a surprise move to Tottenham in September, but the speculation failed to produce a concrete agreement. Now, fresh reports have brought the possibility of a move back into the conversation.

Citing information from Turkey, TyC Sports claim that Tottenham are among the clubs considering offering the Argentine striker an opportunity to continue his career.

The other clubs reportedly interested in his services are PAOK Thessaloniki, Elche, Everton, Real Betis, Besiktas and Benfica.

That list includes several clubs with different attacking needs, but the prospect of signing an experienced forward with Icardi’s goalscoring record could prove attractive to Tottenham if they decide their current options are insufficient.

Icardi has scored 250 goals at senior club level throughout his career, with the majority coming during his spells at Inter Milan and Galatasaray.

His record demonstrates his ability to find the net consistently, particularly when playing in a team that creates opportunities for him inside the penalty area.

However, while his experience and finishing ability make him an interesting name on the free-agent market, there are reasons why Tottenham should think carefully before pursuing a deal.

Dominic Solanke Needs More Support in Tottenham’s Attack

Tottenham’s interest in another striker would be understandable given the uncertainty surrounding their current attacking options.

Solanke remains the club’s recognised centre-forward, and much of their success this season could depend on his ability to stay available and deliver goals regularly.

The former Bournemouth striker possesses the qualities needed to lead the line, but his fitness record since arriving in North London has raised concerns. Tottenham cannot afford to enter every match relying almost entirely on one player to provide their attacking threat.

If Solanke suffers another injury or experiences a prolonged dip in form, the club could quickly find themselves short of reliable options in the most important position on the pitch.

That concern has become more significant following Richarlison’s omission from Tottenham’s Premier League squad.

Meanwhile, Omar Marmoush offers versatility and attacking quality, but he is not a conventional centre-forward in the same mould as Solanke. Although Marmoush can operate through the middle, Tottenham may still benefit from having another recognised No. 9 capable of providing a different attacking dimension.

The lack of depth in that position could become a major issue as the season progresses, especially if De Zerbi wants his team to play with greater intensity and maintain a consistent goalscoring threat.

For that reason, signing another striker could become an important consideration when the January transfer window opens.

However, whether Icardi represents the right solution is another question entirely.

Everton Could Have an Even Greater Need for Icardi

Among the clubs reportedly interested in Icardi, Everton could arguably have the strongest immediate need for another centre-forward.

David Moyes’ attacking options appear limited, with Thierno Barry currently standing out as the available striker for the central attacking role.

That situation could force Everton to explore the market for additional competition and cover, particularly if they want to avoid becoming overly dependent on one player throughout a demanding Premier League campaign.

Icardi’s experience in European football could make him an appealing option for the Merseyside club.

His time at Inter Milan and Galatasaray has exposed him to the pressure of competing at major clubs, while his goalscoring record suggests he knows how to operate effectively inside the box.

Everton could therefore view him as an opportunity to strengthen their squad without paying a transfer fee.

Tottenham, meanwhile, must consider whether bringing in a 33-year-old striker who has been without a club since leaving Galatasaray would represent a worthwhile investment.

Although experience can be valuable, the club need to ensure any potential signing fits De Zerbi’s tactical plans and offers something their current players cannot provide.

Simply signing an established name because he is available on a free transfer would not necessarily solve Tottenham’s underlying problems.

Why Tottenham Should Think Twice Before Signing Icardi

Despite his impressive goalscoring record, Tottenham should be cautious about pursuing a deal for Icardi.

At 33, the Argentine is approaching the latter stages of his playing career, and questions would naturally arise over his ability to adapt to the physical demands and intensity of English football.

His experience could be beneficial, but Tottenham need to think beyond the short-term appeal of acquiring a striker with 250 senior club goals.

De Zerbi is attempting to establish a new identity at Tottenham, and the players brought into the squad must fit the style of football he wants to implement.

The Italian coach will likely want his attacking players to contribute to the team’s pressing structure, movement and build-up play, rather than simply waiting for opportunities inside the penalty area.

Whether Icardi could meet those demands consistently would need to be carefully assessed before any agreement was considered.

There is also the question of whether Tottenham should prioritise a younger striker who could contribute to the club’s long-term rebuilding plans.

With the squad requiring improvements in several areas, Spurs must be careful about committing resources to players who might only provide a temporary solution.

A younger forward with the potential to develop alongside the current squad could offer greater value over several seasons, particularly if Tottenham are serious about returning to European competition.

Nevertheless, if the club believe they need immediate attacking reinforcement, Icardi’s experience and availability could still make him a name worth evaluating.

Premier League Squad Rules Complicate Any Immediate Move

There is another important obstacle Tottenham would need to consider before making a move for Icardi.

The club have already submitted their 25-man Premier League squad for the first half of the season, meaning they cannot simply add another senior player to their registered league squad whenever they choose.

As a result, even if Tottenham reached an agreement with the Argentine striker, registering him to play in the Premier League immediately would present a significant complication.

The situation could make a potential January move more practical, when clubs have another opportunity to make changes to their squads.

However, Tottenham would still need to decide whether Icardi is the right player for their project before committing to negotiations.

For now, the reported interest remains something to monitor rather than a confirmed transfer development.

Tottenham Must Get Their Next Striker Decision Right

Tottenham’s 3-1 victory over Coventry City was an important step in the right direction, but one win will not erase the concerns that have surrounded their performances this season.

De Zerbi needs his team to build momentum, improve their consistency and become more clinical in front of goal if they are to climb the Premier League table.

Solanke will remain central to those ambitions, but expecting him to carry the entire attacking burden would be a risky strategy given his fitness concerns.

Adding another centre-forward could provide valuable competition, give De Zerbi more tactical flexibility and reduce the pressure on Tottenham’s current first-choice striker.

Icardi’s availability makes him an interesting option, and his record of 250 senior club goals is certainly difficult to ignore. However, his age, suitability for De Zerbi’s system and the club’s longer-term plans must all be considered.

Tottenham should not rush into signing Icardi simply because he is available for free. The priority should be finding a striker who can make an immediate contribution while also fitting into the club’s rebuilding project.

With Everton and several European sides reportedly monitoring the Argentine, Spurs may face competition if they decide to pursue him.

Ultimately, Tottenham’s decision will come down to whether they believe Icardi can provide the goals and reliability they need or whether their money and attention would be better directed towards a younger, more suitable alternative when the January transfer window opens.
