Fans are livid with “overrated” ace after watching his “painful” display as Tottenham fell to a 4-1 defeat against Arsenal on Sunday evening.
It’s only February, but there’s already a lot of fraught at both ends of the Premier League table, and this weekend’s north london derby was as consequential as anyone can recall.
But with 14 days to prepare under the mystique that comes with a new manager bounce, Tottenham would surely have expected more from their few high-profile players in Igor Tudor’s first game in charge, even in the face of an injury crisis that is only just starting to ease. The Lilywhites continue to search for their first league win in 2026, and one of their premium summer signings isn’t helping to bail his side out of the increasing threats of relegation.
Eberechi Eze’s opener, with his first shot on target since his hat-trick 91 days ago in the previous derby encounter, lit the blue touchpaper, with Declan Rice affording Randal Kolo Muani a chance to hit back straight away and take the game to 1-1.
But in the second half, Viktor Gyokeres smashed in an Arsenal second before both goalscorers added a second each to put the finishing touches to an important win for the league leaders as they restored a five-point lead over Manchester City.

Tottenham almost signed Eberechi Eze in the summer, before his desire to move back to his boyhood club in a full circle moment meant they had to look towards Xavi Simons’ services instead. All seemed right in the world as the clubs’ hierarchy splashed out £51 million on a signing that was expected to change the way then-Thomas Frank’s team would shift through the gears from midfield.
But as the aforementioned Eze netted his fourth and fifth goals against the hosts for the season, Simons – his opposite number – paled in influence. Across his 90-minute performance, the former PSG wonderkid managed to complete just 75 per cent of his passes, lost possession 22 times, and failed in all three of his dribble attempts. Reacting to his performance online, one X user remarked:
“Xavi Simons is weak and fragile! Losing all those balls in danger zones and not giving the right pass at the right time when Spurs is counter-attacking is holding the team back. Kid is overrated.”
Another added: “Xavi Simons looks like an awful footballer. It’s crazy because isn’t technique meant to be one of the things he’s good at?” while a third wrote: “Xavi Simons, the whole world is watching, and you’re stinking it up bruh.” Elsewhere, a fifth continued: “Xavi Simons is a really frustrating watch most of the time.”
Tottenham’s Slide Turns Relegation From Fantasy to Genuine Possibility
Under Ange Postecoglou last season, there were jokes about Tottenham facing the discordant music of relegation without there being any sort of genuine belief that they could have actually dropped below the dotted line thanks to just how badly Leicester City, Southampton, and Ipswich Town performed as the north Londoners finished 17th.
But with no win in their last 10 league matches, and languishing in 16th – just four points above 18th-placed West Ham – there is now real concern Tottenham could be dragged into something far more damaging than last season’s woes. Those in the danger zone are currently battling much harder than Tudor’s adopted side right now, with Wolves’ draw against the Gunners in midweek evidence of that.
Elsewhere, West Ham are unbeaten in three league matches, as Burnley rescued a point at Chelsea, just a week after a 3-2 comeback victory over Crystal Palace. Tottenham may have enough quality players in their ranks to eventually string a few positive results together, but that purple patch is currently nowhere in sight.
