The 2026/27 Championship season is already shaping up to be one of the most fascinating campaigns in recent memory, with three former Premier League clubs returning to England’s second tier and several ambitious sides dreaming of promotion.

Ahead of the new campaign, the Opta supercomputer has produced its predictions for the Championship, using thousands of simulations to assess the likely outcome of the season.

The model’s verdict is particularly interesting at the top of the table. West Ham United, Wolves, Middlesbrough and Sheffield United are among the leading promotion contenders, while newly promoted clubs such as Cardiff City, Bolton Wanderers and Lincoln City face a completely different challenge as they attempt to establish themselves in the division.

However, the Championship is notoriously difficult to predict. Opta’s model itself highlights just how unpredictable the division can be: across 10,000 simulations, every one of the 24 clubs finished bottom at least 19 times, while every club won the title in at least 30 simulations.

That makes the following prediction fascinating—but certainly not definitive.

Full Supercomputer Prediction

The latest Opta analysis provides probabilities for where each club could finish rather than treating one final table as a guaranteed outcome. Based on the model’s projections and the promotion/relegation picture, the leading contenders are West Ham, Wolves, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Burnley, with a large group capable of competing for the expanded play-off places.

A separate BETSiE simulation reported by Yahoo Sports has produced this full predicted table:

Position| Club| Predicted points
1| West Ham United| 88
2| Southampton| 82
3| Wolves| 77
4| Middlesbrough| 77
5| Sheffield United| 70
6| Burnley| 69
7| Millwall| 69
8| Birmingham City| 68
9| Norwich City| 68
10| Wrexham| 64
11| Watford| 63
12| Swansea City| 61
13| Derby County| 61
14| West Bromwich Albion| 60
15| Bristol City| 59
16| Stoke City| 58
17| Queens Park Rangers| 57
18| Cardiff City| 57
19| Portsmouth| 55
20| Blackburn Rovers| 55
21| Preston North End| 52
22| Charlton Athletic| 50
23| Bolton Wanderers| 50
24| Lincoln City| 49

This particular simulation puts West Ham comfortably at the summit and Southampton second, while Lincoln, Bolton and Charlton occupy the bottom three.

Importantly, this is one model’s prediction, not an official final table.

West Ham United Backed for Immediate Promotion

The biggest story is undoubtedly West Ham.

After 14 consecutive seasons in the Premier League, the Hammers were relegated last season and will now begin life in the Championship with enormous pressure on their shoulders.

Nuno Espírito Santo remains in charge, and the expectation around the London Stadium will be straightforward: promotion.

West Ham have retained important players, including Jarrod Bowen, while also adding Manor Solomon to their attacking options.

The BETSiE model goes even further, predicting West Ham to win the Championship with 88 points.

That would mean avoiding the play-offs altogether and returning to the Premier League as champions.

For Nuno, that would be the perfect response to last season’s disappointment.

The challenge, however, is that being favourites brings its own pressure.

Every opponent will see West Ham as one of the biggest games of the season. Teams are likely to defend deeply, fight aggressively and treat matches against the Hammers as opportunities to make a statement.

West Ham will therefore need consistency rather than occasional brilliance.

Wolves Expected to Challenge

Wolverhampton Wanderers are another club expected to bounce straight back.

Wolves finished bottom of the Premier League last season with just 20 points, according to Opta’s Championship preview. Their relegation ended their latest spell in the top flight and left the club facing a major rebuilding challenge.

The Opta model identifies Wolves as one of the strongest Championship sides, while the BETSiE model places them third with 77 points.

The quality available to recently relegated Premier League clubs can make an enormous difference in the Championship.

But Wolves will still have to adapt quickly.

The Championship is physically demanding, fixtures come thick and fast, and away matches against determined opponents can punish even the strongest squads.

Southampton Have Promotion Ambitions

Southampton are another club expected to challenge near the top.

The Saints suffered their own difficult period in recent seasons and will be desperate to return to the Premier League.

The BETSiE prediction places Southampton second with 82 points, just six behind West Ham.

Another simulation cited by Yahoo Sports also predicted Southampton to finish sixth with 74 points, demonstrating how dramatically different computer models can be.

That difference is important.

It shows that no supercomputer can perfectly predict the Championship.

Small changes in assumptions, squad strength, fixtures and probabilities can produce very different outcomes.

Middlesbrough Could Be a Major Threat

Middlesbrough are another club attracting serious attention.

The club has invested heavily and is expected to challenge for promotion.

The BETSiE model predicts a fourth-place finish and 77 points, while other projections put Middlesbrough even higher.

That means Middlesbrough could become one of the most important clubs in the promotion battle.

The target will be automatic promotion, but even a play-off position would give them an excellent opportunity to return to the Premier League.

Sheffield United in the Promotion Picture

Sheffield United are also expected to be among the leading contenders.

The BETSiE model puts them fifth with 70 points, while Opta’s analysis similarly identifies them as one of the clubs capable of competing near the top.

For a club with recent Premier League experience, the Championship represents an opportunity to rebuild and compete for promotion.

But Sheffield United will need to avoid inconsistency.

The difference between finishing second and finishing outside the play-offs can be extremely small.

Burnley Face an Immediate Test

Burnley are another Premier League relegated side beginning the season with promotion expectations.

They are predicted sixth by BETSiE, collecting 69 points.

That would put Burnley inside the promotion play-off places.

However, another model could easily move them several positions in either direction.

The club’s ability to adapt to the Championship and handle the pressure of being one of the favourites will be crucial.

Wrexham Continue Their Extraordinary Rise

One of the most fascinating clubs in the division is Wrexham.

The Welsh club has experienced an extraordinary rise through the English football pyramid and now faces another major challenge in the Championship.

The BETSiE prediction places Wrexham 10th with 64 points, while another simulation reported earlier in the summer had them as high as sixth.

That variation demonstrates how difficult it is to assess their potential.

Wrexham have repeatedly exceeded expectations.

If they can do so again, another promotion challenge cannot be ruled out.

Birmingham City and Norwich Could Surprise

Birmingham City are predicted eighth, while Norwich are ninth in the BETSiE model.

Both clubs have the resources and history to challenge higher.

Birmingham’s return to the Championship comes with considerable ambition, while Norwich will be looking to rediscover the consistency that has previously made them one of the division’s strongest teams.

A good start could push either club into the promotion conversation.

The Expanded Play-Off Race

One of the most intriguing changes this season is the expansion of the Championship play-offs.

The 2026/27 campaign features an expanded play-off system, meaning more clubs have a realistic route toward promotion.

That could make the final months of the season particularly dramatic.

Instead of only a handful of clubs competing for promotion, a much larger group could remain in contention deep into the campaign.

This could benefit teams that start slowly but finish strongly.

It could also make every point crucial.

A club sitting 10th in March could suddenly find itself within touching distance of the play-offs.

Newly Promoted Clubs Face a Battle

Cardiff City, Bolton Wanderers and Lincoln City have all arrived from League One.

For them, survival rather than promotion will likely be the initial objective.

Cardiff are predicted 18th in the BETSiE model, while Bolton are 23rd and Lincoln 24th.

Lincoln face the most difficult prediction, with just 49 projected points.

However, being predicted for relegation does not mean relegation is inevitable.

Newly promoted clubs can benefit from momentum, team spirit and a lack of pressure.

Lincoln City Given the Toughest Prediction

Lincoln are projected to finish bottom in the BETSiE table.

That would be an extremely difficult campaign for the club.

The challenge of moving from League One into the Championship is significant, particularly when competing against former Premier League clubs with much greater financial resources.

But Lincoln have already demonstrated their ability to outperform expectations.

If they can make a strong start, the prediction could quickly become irrelevant.

Bolton Wanderers Also in Danger

Bolton are predicted 23rd.

The club has returned to the Championship after promotion and will face a huge challenge against established second-tier sides.

Their objective will be to remain competitive throughout the campaign and avoid being dragged into a relegation battle.

A handful of victories at home could make an enormous difference.

Charlton Could Struggle

Charlton Athletic are predicted 22nd.

That puts them immediately above Bolton and Lincoln but still firmly in the relegation conversation.

Charlton will need to prove that they have enough quality to compete consistently at Championship level.

The margin between survival and relegation can be extremely small, and a few additional draws could potentially transform their season.

The Championship Remains Impossible to Predict

Perhaps the most important message from the Opta analysis is that the Championship cannot be reduced to a simple list of favourites.

Across Opta’s 10,000 simulations, every club finished bottom at least 19 times and every club won the league at least 30 times.

That is extraordinary.

It means that even the teams considered outsiders have a mathematical pathway to success.

This is why the Championship is often regarded as one of the most unpredictable leagues in world football.

Final Prediction

If the supercomputer is correct, West Ham United will be crowned Championship champions, with Southampton joining them in the automatic promotion places.

Wolves, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United and Burnley would then lead the play-off contenders, while clubs such as Millwall, Birmingham City, Norwich and Wrexham could remain involved in the promotion conversation.

At the bottom, Lincoln City, Bolton Wanderers and Charlton Athletic are among the clubs facing the biggest predicted relegation danger in the BETSiE projection.

But there is a reason the Championship is so difficult to predict.

The supercomputer has produced its numbers.

The clubs now have 46 league matches to prove them right—or completely wrong.

And with West Ham desperate to return to the Premier League, Wolves and Burnley looking to bounce back, Southampton chasing another promotion and Wrexham continuing their extraordinary journey, the 2026/27 Championship promises to deliver drama from the opening weekend to the final day.
